Restrictions worth checking before you apply
BCBSIL: An organization may receive a grant or sponsorship, but not both in the same year. Its 2026 Blue Impact grant application closed January 30 and will not reopen in 2026; the next process is scheduled for January 2027. Keep that separate from sponsorship requests. Official guidelines.
ALDI: Gift card applications have a public route, while Impact Grants are invitation-only. The gift card application requires tax documents or registration and submission by an official representative or employee. Do not use an old “Smart Kids” listing as a substitute for the current program. Gift card requirements; Impact Grants policy.
Whole Foods: Its October 11 date is an application deadline, not a promise of an award. Donations must support programs in communities surrounding stores. Official timeline and eligibility.
Costco: The current guidelines specify monetary requests only and one application per fiscal year, September through August. Local organizations should follow the warehouse route rather than assume the larger grant application is the right fit. Giving FAQ.
Northern Trust: This is a particularly focused Chicago opportunity, not a citywide general-purpose fund. Its FAQ confirms the incorporation threshold and requires eligible organization staff to use the online process. A Letter of Inquiry is not approval to submit a full application. No fixed deadline was identified in the reviewed foundation and FAQ pages. Foundation FAQ.
Bank of America: Chicago appears on its eligible-market list. Foundation grants exclude organizations operating through a fiscal agent or sponsor. The published 2026 application periods ended March 2 and June 29; unsolicited foundation applications are not accepted outside posted dates. The separate sponsorship route should not be assumed to have the same rules. Markets; Eligibility; Grant FAQ.
How to Choose the Right Corporate Prospects
LAVA’s recommendation is to screen eligibility first, then prioritize relationship potential. Use six questions:
Geographic fit: Does the program cover your actual service area? “Chicago,” “Illinois,” and “near a store” are different boundaries.
Mission fit: Can you point to a published priority that matches your work?
Organizational eligibility: Do your status, incorporation history, and application arrangements meet the requirements?
Credible connection: Is there an existing supporter, employee volunteer, supplier relationship, or relevant local presence?
Specific need: What will the contribution fund, and how will you report its use?
Contact route: Is there a public application, an inquiry process, a sponsorship portal, or no confirmed intake?
For a hypothetical West Side youth organization serving ages 16–24, Northern Trust could warrant close investigation. For a pantry near a Whole Foods store, food-access program support may be a better starting point. Neither example establishes eligibility without checking the full guidelines.
Keep three lists: ready to investigate now, next-cycle prospects, and unsuitable programs. A closed application window belongs on a calendar, not in this week’s outreach queue.
How to Approach a Corporate Sponsor in Chicago
1. Prepare a clear, fundable request
Describe the local problem, who benefits, the activity, the budget, and the result you intend to measure. Use your own verified figures. Explain the neighborhood or service area rather than saying only that you “help Chicago.”
2. Follow the published route
For grants, complete the required eligibility and application steps. For direct sponsorship conversations, identify the appropriate community relations, partnerships, or local business contact through official channels. Do not send a mass email to employees to bypass an application process.
Northern Trust requires online submissions by eligible organization staff. Walmart requires an authorized Spark Good user. If an outside partner helps research or draft materials, your organization should retain the required account access and submission responsibility. Northern Trust FAQ; Walmart guidelines.
3. Make the reason for approaching that company specific
Refer to a relevant giving priority, service area, or genuine connection. Avoid unsupported statements such as “your company cares deeply about our cause.” Explain what you found and why it relates to the proposed work.
4. Make the next step easy
For direct outreach, ask whether the project fits the company’s interests and offer a short summary. For formal applications, submit the requested materials rather than substituting a meeting request.
5. Follow up respectfully and record the outcome
Follow the published review timeline. If no timeline is given for direct outreach, LAVA recommends a brief follow-up after approximately one to two weeks. Record replies, restrictions, next-cycle dates, and declines so your team does not repeatedly approach the wrong person.
What a Small Nonprofit Can Offer a Corporate Partner
A small organization can propose useful, proportionate partnership benefits:
A clear report explaining what the contribution funded and what happened.
A well-organized employee volunteering activity, when it helps your mission.
Recognition appropriate to your actual audience and the company’s preferences.
An opportunity to learn about a local issue through staff briefings or program updates.
A defined project with a realistic budget and an accountable point of contact.
Offer only what you can deliver. Do not promise publicity, customer acquisition, or large audience exposure without evidence. Agree on logo use, recognition, and reporting before announcing a partnership. Costco, for example, asks organizations to coordinate with it before public statements recognizing its contribution. Common Mistakes
Assuming headquarters establish eligibility. Check the program’s geography, not just the company’s address.
Mixing grants and sponsorship. An event recognition package may be irrelevant to a restricted foundation grant.
Treating invitation-only programs as open applications. ALDI Impact Grants and Northern Trust’s invited full applications illustrate why the intake route matters.
Using outdated deadlines. A press release announcing an open cycle may still appear in search results after it closes.
Making the same request to every company. Match the need, contribution type, and company priority before approaching.
Collecting goods you cannot use. Decide whether a gift card, product, or employee activity actually reduces a cost or improves service delivery.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can a small nonprofit find corporate sponsors in Chicago?
Build a shortlist around your cause and service area, confirm program eligibility, and identify the application or contact route. Use this guide as a starting point, then investigate local businesses with a credible connection to your work.
Can a new nonprofit apply for corporate support?
Check each program’s rules. Northern Trust requires at least three years of incorporation; other reviewed programs have different eligibility requirements. An omitted age requirement is not confirmation that a new organization qualifies. Northern Trust FAQ.
Who should we contact at a company?
Start with the official giving or sponsorship instructions. When direct outreach is appropriate, research the person responsible for community relations, partnerships, or local sponsorship decisions. A branch or store contact should not be assumed to control a corporate foundation budget.
Do companies support operating expenses?
Some programs do. Northern Trust explicitly lists general operating support alongside program grants for its defined target population. That does not establish an unrestricted-funding option at other companies. Northern Trust Foundation.
What is the difference between sponsorship and a corporate grant?
A sponsorship usually involves agreed partnership or recognition arrangements. A corporate grant follows the funder’s grantmaking criteria and process. Let the program guidelines determine the request format, permitted spending, and reporting obligations.
Which opportunities should we check first in 2026?
If eligible, check Whole Foods Store Giving before October 11, ALDI’s gift card program before October 31, and Walmart’s current local-grant cycle before November 30. For a health-related event or project, review BCBSIL sponsorships with its minimum two-month lead time. These are application routes, not promises of support. Whole Foods; ALDI; Walmart; BCBSIL.
